Translation grants from Performing Arts Centre Iceland

In order to apply for this grant you must be the director, producer of the play in Iceland or a representative of the theatre/festivalwhere the translated play will be performed.

The aim of translation grants is to arouse interest, increase visibility and demand for Icelandic plays and performing arts abroad.

A translation grant is awarded to support the translation of original Icelandic plays into other languages. The play must have been premiered in Iceland before applying for a translation.

It is also possible to apply for a grant for subtitle for Icelandic stage works for performance outside Iceland.

Note that Performing Arts Centre does not fully finance translations.

A condition for the grant is that the translation is prepared directly from Icelandic and that there is a willingness to exhibit the work abroad. It is desirable for a translator to have the language translated into a mother tongue.

Support for adaptation or production costs is not covered by this subsidy.

Translation grants from the Icelandic Performing Arts Centre are awarded twice a year. You can apply in February and September.

The advisory board of Performing Arts Centre Iceland is composed of representatives from SAFAS - the consultation forum of professional associations in the performing arts.  Applications are assessed according to how they fit the objectives of translation grants to attract interest, increase visibility and demand for performing arts outside Iceland.

In order for the application to be considered, the following documents and particulars must be attached.

The application must be accompanied by a letter of intent from the presenting venue or festival outside Iceland regarding the performance of the play.
The script of a play on Icelandic.
Author's confirmation of permission to translate and consent of the author to the translator of the work.
Translator's CV.
Signed contract with the translator.

Responses to applications for translation grants are received by e-mail at least 4 weeks after the application deadline.

70% of the grant is awarded at the beginning of the work and 30% when a copy of the fully translated manuscript has been submitted to Performing Arts Centre Iceland.

Translation shall be completed within 6 months of granting.

Performing Arts Centre Iceland undertakes to treat all documents related to applications as strictly confidential.

The completed translation must be submitted to the Performing Arts Centre to confirm completion.

When the play is accepted for exhibition abroad, a notification must be made to the Performing Arts Centre.

We note that new applications cannot be submitted until a translation has been submitted.
